Aerospace and Defense M&A Trends
According to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the Aerospace and Defense Industry maintains its competitive edge by continually evolving and focusing on new and expanding technology. Expansion areas include but are not limited to micro/nanotechnology, network-centric warfare, intelligence gathering systems, energy optimized aircraft and equipment systems, and testing of alternative fuel sources for aircrafts. Nanotechnology, for example, in recent years has grown into one of the most well-resourced research fields with funding at over 700% of its 1997 level.
The AIAA reports:
"Active areas of research include nano-devices and -systems, nanoelectronics, nano-manufacturing, nano-materials, and nano-sensors. In addition, there is great interest in the environmental, health and safety aspects of nanotechnology. Current research activities include the ability to combine multiple 'nano' disciplines to create new, synergistic applications of nanotechnology."
Aerospace was specifically identified in the President’s FY04 budget by the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative as a field in which nanotechnology has the potential to enable a wealth of innovation, particularly in materials/structures and intelligent bio-nanomaterials.
The pressure for innovation in the Aerospace and Defense Industry increased significantly after 9/11 and during the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Of course, a greater focus on national and global security was reflected in US companies as contractors reorganized in order to meet new defense department requirements.
PricewaterhouseCoopers reports that defense deal-making, which was strong during the years following 9/11, actually stalled in 2008 as new market realities became apparent. In 2007, for example, there were 77 private equity deals in the US resulting in a total value of $16 billion. In 2008, there were 31 private equity deals resulting in a mere 2.4 billion total value...a $13.6 billion difference. In 2007, there were seven $1 billion plus deals in the US; in 2008, there was only one—the General Dynamics Corp Jet Aviation deal.
Civil aviation is also took a hit in 2008 as the demand for air travel and air cargo services declined, and jet fuel costs soared in the summer months. Companies such as Boeing and Airbus responded with “modest production cuts” which trickled all the way down the chain of sub-contractors and industry workers.
PwC predicts an even lower year for 2009. Cash flow and reserves is the priority for larger companies, which may leave smaller companies in a bit of trouble, looking for buyers. “Looking forward, concerns about global capacity, cancelled orders, flatter defense spending and technological challenges associated with the manufacture of the new generation of aircraft will influence deal-making.”
Grant Thornton presents a slightly different forecast for the Aerospace and Defense Industry. In fact, it claims that M&A activity was actually strong in 2008 and maintained its position as one of the best performing industries…standing in “stark contrast to U.S. M&A activity as a whole, which declined by a third in volume terms from the prior year.” Overall, according to Thorton, the industry outlook “remains positive” as A&D industry sales grew 2% during the year, which is a new high.
Commercial and military markets showed modest growth in 2008, and sales in 2009 are predicted to increase by 7% “a result of strong backlog, a cautious approach to capacity increases and 2008 sales being depressed by work stoppages at Boeing. Longer term, Boeing remains confident of continued 5% annual growth in air travel.” And, despite reductions expected in defense spending for Iraq, military sales are predicted to increase 4% in 2009 due to a “significant lag between budget cuts and current purchases.”
With conflicting forecasts and uncertainties, perhaps the best advice we can offer our subscribers for the coming months is, as PwC suggests many companies will do, to take on a tempered yet optimistic “wait and see” attitude until concerns have an opportunity to play themselves out. The market will eventually bounce back and as the AIAA claims, the A&D Industry will remain a forerunner globally because of its commitment to research and innovation. Who knows where nanotechnology will carry us in the next decade!

UMS: Change, Is It Really All That Bad?
Change: Is it really all that bad?
*An article I wrote and published in the school's bi-monthly publication.
Several years ago my husband and I were in Inner Mongolia, China on a development project, providing educational supplies to meagerly funded rural classrooms. The schools we adopted were in terrible shape. It was not uncommon to walk into uninsulated cinderblock rooms with broken windows, poorly hung blackboards, a few pieces of chalk and old wooden desks. Indoor plumbing was rare in rural schools, which meant that outhouses were a thing of the present, rather than a thing of the past.
Young children who lived too far to travel to and from school each day were able to board in dorms. Dorm conditions were even less desirable than the classrooms—small rooms with bunk beds, shabby blankets and coal burning stoves centrally located to provide heat. One would pray for a bunk in the middle of the dorm. Winter months in Inner Mongolia are bitterly cold and these rooms provided little shield from the elements.
Those in development work will tell you that one really needs to keep his/her sense of humor; otherwise, the conditions can start to get to you…especially when you know the difference. So, when driving from school to school, our team would look for reasons to laugh by telling each other funny stories in broken English (our Chinese partner spoke little English and we spoke even less Chinese).
Our Chinese partner and friend, whom we called John, is one of the most jovial guys we’ve ever met. On one of our long drives in Inner Mongolia, John told us a story that I will never forget. He claimed it was absolutely a true. I wasn’t there when it happened, so I had no choice but to believe him. The story goes something like this:
There was once an elderly Chinese lady from Inner Mongolia who spent the whole of her life growing and selling vegetables at a local market. This elderly lady had a daughter who, when of age, attended a distant boarding school. The elderly lady was very proud of her daughter, but of course, missed her dearly as the two saw each other very little throughout the girl’s youth.
Upon completion of high school, the girl did what all devoted Chinese daughters do—she returned home to care for her mother. The two quickly realized that they did not see eye-to-eye on everything, especially since one had received an education and the other had not. One such discovery came the first summer of the daughter’s return home. As was the custom while in school, the daughter made plans to go to a local bathhouse for her seasonal bath. The daughter had saved a few coins to pay for her mother and herself to bathe after a long winter.
When news came to the elderly lady that her daughter had made arrangements for the two of them to go to the local bathhouse, she immediately began to protest. “I will not go with you…I WILL NOT!” The daughter did not understand and responded by saying, “Well, of course you will, Mother. Everyone does it. Don’t you wish to be clean?” Once more the elderly woman declared adamantly, “I WILL NOT do it…I WILL NOT! One only bathes THREE times in her life—when she is born, when she marries and when she dies. I am NOT GOING TO DIE! I may be old, but I am not dead YET!”
The daughter, equally as stubborn as her mother, devised a scheme. One morning on their way to market, she tricked her mother into going to the bathhouse. When the elderly lady realized where she was, it was too late. Bath attendants were removing her outer clothing until all she had on was her long underwear (even the summers in Inner Mongolia are chilly!). Like an unhappy and protesting child, she fought, kicked and screamed: “You can’t do this to me! STOP! STOP! STOP! You can’t dooooo this to meeeee!”
Before the elderly woman knew it, her bath had ended and she was leaving the bathhouse with her daughter. At first she was very angry with her daughter, but when she finally calmed down, she began to notice how nice her body felt to be clean. “Mother, how do you feel?” asked her daughter. “I feel like a new woman,” she said. Thank you for tricking me into bathing. I wish I had done this years ago!” And, from that summer forward, the elderly woman never missed a seasonal bath…nor the wonderful feeling of being clean. The End.
And the moral of the story? For us, there are two. First, may we never forget how wonderfully blessed we are to have such a beautiful campus where our children are able to attend school. And, secondly, change can actually be a good thing. It may not always feel comfortable at the time, but ultimately, change can bring new beauty and joy to us.
When my daughter first came to Undercroft, driving through carpool and releasing her into the very capable hands of someone other than myself, was one of the hardest things I had ever done. In fact, it was hard every day for a while. Each time she whined, “Mommy, I don’t want to go to school,” for a brief moment, I wondered if I had pushed her to go to school too early. I had to keep reminding myself, “No, Kathy. You made the right decision. She is doing well and is in the very best place. Trust the process.” I am so glad I made that decision (many times over, might I add). It was a major change in our lives that eventually led me to where I am today.
Perhaps you are one of those parents who questions your decision to send your child to a private school. My encouragement to you is to watch and wait. Come to the observation room (or schedule a time in the classroom) and see your child at work. Observe how truly joyful he or she is while immersed in meaningful work, and just how much everyone in classroom community truly matters. I’m confident this will calm your questions just as it did mine.
If we’re honest, few of us enjoy change at the time of it’s happening, but when things are all said and done, often we look back and wonder why all the fuss. Change is like a nice warm bath after a long cold hard-working winter…oh so refreshing and NECESSARY.
Let change do its thing. It may just surprise you.

THE DON MOEN COMPANY
Christian Platinum Recording Artist, Don Moen, Ends 20-Year Association With Integrity Music to Launch New Entrepreneurial Venture: The Don Moen Company
Nashville, TN, July 1, 2008 – Successful Christian recording artist, Don Moen, today announced the end of his 20-year association with Integrity Music, and his consequent formation of The Don Moen Company—a new entrepreneurial venture with a mission to proclaim and demonstrate the values of the Kingdom of God to the world.
Christian recording artist, Don Moen, after faithfully serving as executive, artist and songwriter with Integrity Media for 20 years, announced on July 1, 2008 that he has chosen to move beyond this association in order to pursue dreams that have been in his heart for decades. In reflecting on this move, Moen comments: “It has become clear to me that being president of a Christian music company is only part of the role God is calling me to fill. The Don Moen Company will allow me to continue to resource the Church, especially in the area of worship, and, at the same time, speak to the broader culture with Kingdom values. I also intend to be more intentional about my calling as a mentor in the area of songwriting and worship leading.”
In building his new enterprise, Moen has engaged Chief Operating Officer, Chris Long, a veteran communications and entertainment executive. Long adds, “It is an incredible privilege to serve Don in this new endeavor. Our vision is to build a substantial enterprise that plays to Don’s strengths as a mentor, visionary leader and product creator—both here and around the world. We expect to announce our first major acquisition within 30 days and intend to partner with organizations and leaders that have a passion for God’s Kingdom.”
While at Integrity Media, Moen served as President of Integrity Music and appeared as the face of the organization around the globe, leading live worship experiences under the brands iWorship and Songs4Worship. Moen personally attracted and signed influential worship artists/songwriters for the company, including: Hillsong Church, Israel Houghton, Brian Doerksen and Paul Baloche. Moen’s platinum worship album, Give Thanks, has sold more than one million copies worldwide, and the Church musical he composed, God With Us, has been hugely successful.
Moen is currently in the process of recording his final worship album on the Integrity label. This album is scheduled to be released internationally in the fall of 2008, and in the United States in the spring of 2009. Moen’s other big summer event will be at the Christian Songwriters’ Conference in Santa Cruz, CA on August 25-28, 2008, where he, alongside many other world-renown Christian songwriters and instructors, will mentor young songwriters interested in honing their craft in a creative, constructive and inspiring setting. At this event, Moen will release several new DVD resource products for worship leaders.
In the fall of 2008, Moen is thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to Vietnam. In partnership with UNICEF, he will participate in bringing hope through quality health care and education services to Vietnamese children throughout the country—children who live with disabilities as a result of exposure to dioxin left over from the spraying of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Soon thereafter, Moen will conclude 2008 with an exciting trip to Nigeria where he is scheduled for the second year in a row, to be the featured artist at The Experience music festival, expected to draw crowds of up to 500,000 attendees.

Tulsa OBGYN Website Content
This is website content I wrote for Tulsa OBGYN (TOGA) of Tulsa, Ok. The section on 4-Dimensional Ultrasounds was also used for a promotional brochure. TOGA is a client of Hampton Creative, the ones who contracted me for this project.

Our Facility
Tulsa OB-GYN Associates is conveniently located next door to Saint John Hospital and across the street from beautiful Utica Square. When you enter our lobby, you will immediately notice that we are different than most other medical offices. Our waiting room is beautifully decorated with soothing colors, comfortable chairs, plasma televisions and calming music—qualities more common of spas than physicians’ offices. Examining rooms are designed with colors, furniture and accent pieces to soothe our patients. And, each physician’s office reflects his or her personal tastes in décor, allowing patients to see the more private side of their caregiver. A visit to our offices will feel like a get-away.
Our Services
At Tulsa OB-GYN Associates, we firmly believe that all women have a fundamental right to quality, comprehensive healthcare. As gynecologists, we encourage proactive examinations, including annual pap smears and other screening services. As obstetricians our focus is providing the best care to women and their babies throughout pregnancy and delivery. This twofold specialty allows physicians to offer a wide range of medical services and minimally invasive surgical care, while fully utilizing innovative technology and research.
TOGA 4D Ultrasound
Website Content
The physicians of Tulsa’s OB-GYN Associates are thrilled to announce a new service to its patients: 4-Dimensional Ultrasound viewing.
Using the latest ultrasound technology, parents have the opportunity to see their sweet baby’s very first movements—a blink, a smile, a yawn, kick, wave, sticking out his tongue, sucking his thumb and many other cute facial expressions—all while cozy and secure in Mommy’s womb.
Four-dimensional (4D) ultrasounds take three-dimensional (3D) ultrasounds and add real time to them, making it possible for parents, family and friends to get an amazing sneak peek at their little pride and joy. Our registered and certified technicians, who are trained exclusively in this specialized 4D technology, will help you see striking views of your baby. They will take pictures and record the session to DVD, so you can then share your experience with as many people as you like.
4-D ultrasounds are completely safe and painless.
They use exactly the same intensity of ultrasonic waves as the conventional 2D ultrasound, but with significantly advanced technology, which enables you to see your baby much more clearly. You’ll walk away from the experience with a memory of your baby’s earliest moments that will remain with you for a lifetime. It is a truly rewarding parent-fetal bonding time.
Because this is a non-essential diagnostic, the cost is not covered by insurance plans. Tulsa OB-GYN Associates simply asks patients to pay for this service on the day of their visit. Call our office today and set up your appointment.

Scot J. Law Founder, Director and Photographer
Scot’s greatest asset for the Nexus Imagery team is his creative eye and his global perspective. With a Business degree in hand and a professional photographer by trade, Scot has shot award-winning imagery around the world in 50 countries and on four continents. One of Scot’s specialties is his extensive work in the global/non-profit sector and in his ability to thrive in extreme working environments with limited time to “point and shoot.”
A sample of Scot’s documentary and photojournalism experience includes interviews and portraits of global leaders Lt. Col. Oliver North and Kurdish Prime Minister Nechervan Barzani; short films on the plight of Afghan refugees, inside al Qaeda, and survival and relief stories on the heels of the devastating Indonesian tsunami of 2004. Scot has also produced still and moving imagery for National Speakers and New York Times best-selling authors.
Why did Scot choose imagery? He believes it is because imagery is the one profession that gives him the opportunity to create visual memories for others. That is where we are in the world today—we first “see” and then we believe. From great products and services to capturing an act of goodwill, Scot counts it an honor to tell the story of others through still and moving imagery.

On December 26, 2004, the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph, the Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake, triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, killing more than 225,000 people in eleven countries. The following in this series of four photographs were taken in Banda Aceh, Indonesia after the horrific tsunami pummeled its shoreline. This image is of Pak Jafar looking out over the remains of where his home once stood and his family once lived. Jafar was the only survivor of his immediate family. 43 of 50 extended family members were killed that day.

International rescue workers from around the world banded together to provide assistance in the form of clean drinking water, food and medical supplies. Approximately $7 billion was given towards such relief efforts. This Indonesian aid worker, also known as a “Body Snatcher,” was one of many responsible for locating and removing the bodies of those killed by the tsunami.

Refugee camps overwhelmed by displaced people did their best to treat the injured, feed the hungry and comfort the mourning. This father and child were ones of those who lived…and grieve the loss of loved ones still today. The father in the photograph said his entire village was destroyed and when asked how big the wave was that hit, he described it as two palm trees tall.

Imagine the anger you must feel to loose everything, and then to find yourself as the father or mother of small children, sleeping in the dirt under a thin sheet of what they call a “tent” in sub-freezing temperatures. Your children are sick, hungry and cold. At home you could help them…but not here. Why? They tell you it’s because of the Americans.
This is the situation the World Compassion team found themselves in as they entered an Afghan refugee camp in western Pakistan. Surrounded by 10,000 angry, brick and rock-toting Afghan refugees, the WC team was forced to barricade themselves in this storage facility in the center of a UN compound for five hours until help came.
9. Afghan_old_man new.jpg
Afghanistan, located at the crossroads of Central, West and South Asia, is a nation that has historically been molded by the masses of migrating peoples who have settled there. Such a menagerie of cultures attempting to co-exist is, without doubt, largely responsible for the nation’s stagnation and continual destruction under such leadership as the Taliban.
Also known as the "Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement" the Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001. They were ostracized from the world community because of their inhumane treatment of citizens, specifically women and girls, as well as for providing sanctuary to infamous terrorists groups, namely al-Qaeda led by Osama bin Ladin. The elderly man in this picture was a community leader of a village on the outskirts of Kabul and a typical supporter of the Taliban.
10. Afgha04090991.jpg
Under the Taliban, women such as the lady in this photograph lived under what some historians call “gender apartheid” or virtual house arrest. During these years, women lost all visibility, voice and mobility. They were banished from the work force, not permitted to receive an education, and could not leave their homes unless clothed in a burqa covering 100% of their skin and accompanied by a male relative (behind which they were forced to walk as a sign of submission). Furthermore, many women died senselessly because male doctors were not permitted to examine female patients, and only a very select few female doctors and nurses were permitted to care for the masses of women giving birth or otherwise in need of medical attention. Consequences for violating such inhumane edits included public beatings, floggings and executions. It was a very dark time in Afghanistan’s history that hopefully the world will never forget or repeat.

Landlocked in the Himalayas between India and China, Bhutan is known by the Bhutanese as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon.” Bhutan is one of the most isolated and least developed nations in the world, but its people are some of the happiest. In order to preserve its tradition and unique cultural heritage, the government of Bhutan heavily regulates tourism. A government appointed guide is assigned to all tourists.
This image is of a festival hosted by the Buddhist monks of a local Dzong (a fortress found in most Bhutanese communities that consists of courtyards, temples, and housing for monks) to commemorate the deeds of Buddha.

In the next 15-20 years an estimated 345 million rural Chinese will migrate to cities. This phenomenon is the largest migration of people in recorded history. In 2004, more than half of all concrete used in construction around the world was poured into Chinese cities. Consequently, villages scattered across the countryside of every province in China, are slowly disappearing. In many villages, most young adults have gone and only the very young and very old remain. This elderly man is one who has remained.
13. China07010066.jpg
In China, once children reach 8th grade, only 50% will be allowed to progress to secondary school due to inadequate government funds devoted to secondary education. Instead, the unfortunate ½ of children who do not progress will begin working in some capacity to help support their families. This picture was taken in _____ province, China during a World Compassion distribution of educational supplies at a school in great need of additional resources.
14. Myanm06050863.jpg
Since 1989, Myanmar has been under military rule. It is becoming a well-known fact, largely based on research conducted by Human Rights Watch, that the governing military knowingly (but denies it) targets male children as recruits, forcing or coercing them into service and eventual combat. Military recruiters desperate to avoid harsh discipline and potential loss of their command posts and dealing with an extremely high desertion rate and quotas of up to 7,000 new recruits per month, target uneducated, lower income children for obligatory military service.
To counteract this, organizations such as UNICEF and others have organized educational campaigns to give such children an opportunity to resist military coercion. The missionary teacher in this picture is one of many who has devoted her life to the safety and well-being of children. She conducts classes for children who otherwise would never go to school, and has personally adopted the twin girls she is holding in her arms.

Tullius, Taylor, Sartain and Sartain Corporate Film Script
This is a script I wrote that was used as a voiceover for a corporate short film created for a Tulsa-based accounting firm by Nexus Imagery.
Tullius, Taylor, Sartain and Sartain Script
Why should you consider TTS&S a place of choice to work? First, we have history. Founded in 1990 by Ray Tullius and Jim Taylor and joined by Bud and George Sartain in 1992, we have 18 years of history of which we are very proud.
In 1995 and 1997, we merged in two tax practices and two new partners. In 2001, we opened our Fayetteville, Arkansas practice, expanding the location from four to eleven personnel. And, in the last seven years, we have promoted ten people to partner. Today, we are an independent firm of 75 professionals focused on audit, tax, accounting and litigation services, and a wonderful staff of individuals who provide essential administrative assistance.
Eighteen years of sustainable growth such as TTS&S has experienced, should tell you something about our culture. Accounting professionals want to be a part of what’s happening at TTS&S. The opportunities for continued development and expansion are endless because we are not afraid to embrace the entrepreneurial spirits of our employees.
At TTS&S we are a “family” of high performance specialists where each member is empowered to take ownership of his or her area of expertise, in order to serve our clients in the most informed and professional manner possible. We are zealous about our employees, our work and our clients, and have a passion for excellence. This unique culture is what has earned us the distinction as one of “America’s Top Audit Firms”.
At TTS&S, when one succeeds, we all succeed. We communicate openly and consult with other professionals in our affiliate networks—CPAmerica, Horwath International and McGladrey and Pullen—because we know that we don’t always have all the answers, but we can find them.
Secondly, you should consider TTS&S as a place of choice to work because we truly live our cultural values AND our vision. We value our people—their professional and personal lives. We value balance. We’re all about our people attaining their professional strides and avoiding burning out. And, we value the “Prize”—Profitability, Relationships built on Respect, Integrity, Zealousness in Commitment and Passionate for Excellence.
What is our vision? We do our best to be a lasting business with an entrepreneurial spirit, where we are leaders in the markets we serve. We know this can only happen if we attract and retain talented professionals to our company—ones who share our goal of balancing quality of life with professional challenges and opportunities. We live by the “BELL”—Balanced lifestyle, Entrepreneurial spirit, Leaders in our markets and being a Lasting business.
The mission of Tullius, Taylor, Sartain and Sartain is straightforward: Helping our clients AND our people achieve their goals. We offer great salaries, benefits and pay programs. We embrace opportunities to grow and learn. We keep dialogue open, and pursue interesting and stimulating projects. We recognize accomplishments and have fun doing it. We are flexible and understand that our people have lives outside of the office.
TTS&S is a great place to work. But, don’t only ask us. Ask our employees. Ask the alumni of Oklahoma State University, Oral Roberts University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Tulsa and the 14 other schools represented by our firm. We are highly confident that each one of them will concur.
Tullius Taylor Sartain & Sartain
It is that good. Seventy-five people in two locations.
Combining dreams and goals into a lasting business model.

Lifetree Adventures
This is one page (of 72) of a travel brochure I wrote for Lifetree Adventures of Loveland, CO, a client of Hampton Creative who contracted me for the project.
Israel
Trip and Service Description
Shalom from the Holy Land! Welcome to the most beautiful place on earth—a land richly steeped in history, tradition, culture and wonder. Seven days is a short time to take in a few thousands of years of information!
If you have the impression that Israel is predominately arid, the cool breezes of the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights and of Mount Hermon will pleasantly surprise you. You’ll enjoy floating in the salty waters of the Dead Sea—the lowest spot on earth—and feeling rejuvenated by this natural skin therapy experience.
You will have the opportunity to stand in the place where Jesus Christ gave his famous Sermon on the Mount, and make a brief stop in Bethlehem, the place of his birth. Other famous locations you’ll see are the upper room of the last supper and the Garden of Gethsemane. And, for a very unique viewing experience, you’ll take a cable car tour over the famed archaeological site of King Herod’s Palace.
Jerusalem is an unforgettable city. Climb Mount Scopus to take in the magnificent views, visit King David’s tomb, reverently pause at the Western Wall, and decompress from all of this with fun shopping in some of Jerusalem’s most colorful bazaars.
After eight glorious days in the Holy Land, you will have the opportunity to serve alongside an indigenous nonprofit group with a vision to end hunger in their homeland. Currently, 22% of Israelis are food insecure and rely on emergency food programs to meet their basic nutritional needs. You’ll spend your remaining days in Israel picking fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers and distributing them to nonprofit organizations tackling hunger. You’ll also make delicious sandwiches for school children attending class in 70 schools in central and northern Israel.
This will be a dream tour of the Holy Land that you won’t want to miss!
A Few Tips to Help You Strike Up an Interesting Conversation in Israel:
• Could you explain to me the rules of Shabbat (Sabbath or day of rest)?
• What happened on your Bar Mitzvah (celebration of coming of age)?
• How do you count down the Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)?
• Where’s the mechabeh esh (literally: a fire putter outer) in case I need one?
• Is it kosher (meet the Jewish dietary standard/law) to eat chicken wings?
• Do you think we can find a place to buy a yarmelkeh (prayer hat)?
• What do I do if someone is honkin' me a chinick (bothering me)?
• Instead of monkfish, are you able to eat rabbifish? (bad joke!)
• Let’s have a toast to our zei gesund (health)! Mazel tov (good luck)!
Lost in Translation:
• Pa’am shlishi glida, the way we say "third time is a charm" in Hebrew, is translated literally as “third time is ice cream!”
• Wanting just a few bites of comfort food from home? Ask for Doritos and you’ll receive a bag of chips. Wanting cereal for breakfast? Ask for cornflakes because it stands for ALL cereal. Just looking for a simple bagel? Be prepared to chew on a soft pretzel instead. In the mood for chips and salsa? Order nachos. BUT, don’t be surprised when the waiter brings you a plate of chips without one shred of cheese and smothered in ketchup.
• When you see a policeman, shmooz (chat with) him by saying, “I like your chakalaka!” He’ll love that you’ve complimented the revolving light/siren on to of his cop car.
• "Ani lo mevin klum…tess-em-ess li" is translated literally as “I don’t understand anything…send me an SMS!”
• If you’re eating at a restuarant and the waiter asks you if everything’s ok, tell him “hakol bechedder”. In other words, “Everything’s perfectly cheddar!”
